Theย Mughal Emperor Akbar started to build this elementary structure by the named โAgra Fortโ in the year of 1565, and subsequently taken over by his grandson Shah Jahan, who added most of the marble built to the fort. It is ringed by double castellated ramparts of red sandstone brought to Agra all the way from Rajasthan, punctuated at regular intervals by bastions. The layout of the fort was determined by the course of the river, the main axis is parallel to the river and the walls bridge out towards the city. In 1983 it was declared under the UNESCO World Heritage site.
