The Red Fort of Agra is a perfect example of the Mughal art and architecture. It is a famous historical fort and one of the most visited tourist spots in Agra, located on the right bank river of theย Yamuna River in the historical city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. When the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi, it was the main residence of the emperors of theย Mughal Dynasty until 1638. Before capture by the British, theย Maratha Empire is the last Indian rulers to have occupied it. It is located 2.5 km northwest of more famous monument, the Taj Mahal. Also the fort can be described as a walled city.

Theย Mughal Emperor Akbar started to build this elementary structure by the named โAgra Fortโ in the year of 1565, and subsequently taken over by his grandson Shah Jahan, who added most of the marble built to the fort. The fort is crescent shaped, flat with a long wall along the river to the east. It is ringed by double castellated ramparts of red sandstone brought to Agra all the way from Rajasthan, punctuated at regular intervals by bastions. The surrounding outer wall is 9m wide and 10m deep. An imposing 22m high interior wall evokes the feeling of indomitable defensive construction. The layout of the fort was determined by the course of the river, the main axis is parallel to the river and the walls bridge out towards the city. In 1983 it was declared under the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Within the premises of the fort lie the most exquisite structures of the Mughals like the Pearl Mosque, Diwan-i-Am, Khaas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas,ย Moti Masjidand Jahangiri Mahal. This place is very beautiful for every history and architecture lovers for these remarkable handicrafts and ornaments. In the fort there were originally four gates, later two of which were walled up. Now, visitors are allowed to entry only through the Amar Singh gate. Visitor enters through Amar Singh gate, they will first see the remarkable Jahangir Mahal. You can also see the magnificent view of the Taj Mahal from Agra Fort!
