Howrah Bridge, Kolkata: The Howrah Bridge, also known as Rabindra Setu, is an iconic landmark in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The Howrah Bridge was commissioned in 1943. Originally named the New Howrah Bridge, it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location, connecting the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata (Calcutta).

On June 14, 1965, it was renamed Rabindra Setu after Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian and Asian Nobel winner. Despite the official name change, it is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.



Howrah Bridge Timings:

The Howrah Bridge in Kolkata operates 24 hours a day, serving both vehicular traffic and pedestrians. You can get a nice view of the Hooghly River while crossing the bridge.

There is no such thing as an entry fee for Howrah Bridge. It is freely available for everyone to travel from Howrah – Kolkata or vice versa.

Howrah Bridge Overview:

The Howrah Bridge is one of four bridges spanning the Hooghly River. The other three are the Vidyasagar Setu (popularly called the Second Hooghly Bridge), the Vivekananda Setu, and the relatively new Nivedita Setu. Among these, the Howrah Bridge stands out as a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal.

This massive steel bridge carries approximately 100,000 vehicles daily and possibly more than 150,000 pedestrians, making it the busiest cantilever bridge in the world. Its design features a suspension type with a combination of steel truss arch elements. The bridge has a total length of 705 meters (approximately 2,313 feet) and a width of 71 feet (with two footpaths of 15 feet on either side). The longest span of the bridge measures 1,500 feet.

When it was constructed, the Howrah Bridge was the third-longest cantilever bridge in the world. Although it no longer holds that title, it remains an impressive feat of engineering. The bridge’s clearance above the water is 5.8 meters, while the clearance below it is 8.8 meters.
