Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata Overview

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata is located in Jorasanko, is the  ancestral home of the first Indian and non-European Nobel laureate Kaviguru Rabindranath Thakur (Tagore). The Jorasanko Thakur Bari was built in 1785 in Jorasanko in the north of Kolkata in West Bengal in India. The place on which this paternal home stands today was given in by the famous Sett family of Burra bazar to Prince Dwarka Nath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore’s grandfather. Thakur Bari is spread over 35000 square meters.


History

Rabindranath Tagore was born here in 1861 and spent his entire childhood in this home itself. In the year 1961, as part of the centenary ceremony of Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore, then the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray lawfully procured the house. Thus, it came under the care of the Government. Finally on 8th May, 1961 the Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru established the Rabindra Bharati Museum in honor of Kaviguru. Jorasanko Thakur Bari is now located inside Rabindra Bharati University campus, the university was setup in 1962. The Museum is an integral part of the Rabindra Bharati University, for the progress of the greatest lesson in various disciplines of Humanities and Performing Arts.



Architecture

Recently Thakur Bari, home to a campus of Rabindra Bharati University as well, would started its own delightful light-and-sound and also earth 3d show. At a time, 80 to 100 people would be able to view a show. Two shows per day would take place, starting from 7 pm. Initially, all the shows would be in Bengali. Later on, English and Hindi shows would be introduced. Tickets have to be bought for the show, separate from the one bought for the museum at Jorasanko Thakur Bari.  The Rabindra Bharati Museum has a total collection 716 paintings, 208 persona Lia, 168 utensils, 89 spools, and 27 crafts and sculptures. In addition to these, there is an incredible collection of 2,701 books, 3746 archival documents, and 3297 photographs.


Best Time To Visit

Every year Rabindra Bharat Museum of Kolkata celebrates Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday on 25th Baishakh (Bengali Calendar) and the day of demise on 22nd Saravana (Bengali Calendar) and also celebrates the birth anniversaries of other famous poets. This is the best time to visit museum on the birthdays of different poets so that you get a chance to be part of the grand celebrations. If you come to Kolkata so please visit this beautiful place.
