Kalighat Kali Temple, Kolkata | Timings, Location – Full Details

The Kalighat Kali Temple is one of Indiaโ€™s 51 Shakti Peethas, where the little finger of Devi Satiโ€™s right foot fell during Lord Shivaโ€™s destructive dance (Tandav), according to Hindu literature. Some historical reports date it back to the 15th century, while some believe it is even older, but the true origins of Kalighat Temple are unknown.

The Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family, a prominent name in Kolkataโ€™s history, sponsored the construction of the Kalighat Templeโ€™s current structure in the 19th century, specifically in 1809. Although the current edifice dates back to the 19th century, documents from the 15th century reference an earlier structure.

Things to See Inside Kalighat Kali Temple Kolkata

Natmandir

Natmandir is a massive rectangular verandah placed next to the main temple structure. Zamindar Kashinath Roy commissioned the natmandir in 1835. When one goes up to the natmandir, he or she may plainly view the face of the Goddessโ€™ picture. The building undergoes periodic renovations.

Jor Bangla

Jor Bangla is the main templeโ€™s platform or verandah, located just beyond the sanctum sanctorum. Apart from the natmandir, this platform provides a view of the rites performed inside the Garbha Griha.

Sosthi Tala

Worshippers use the three-foot-high rectangular platform known as the sosti tala as an altar for three stone monuments. These monuments represent and honor the three Goddesses: Sosti, Shitala, and Mangal Chandi, who are considered incarnations of Goddess Kali herself. Gobinda Das Mondal created the Sosti Tala altar in 1880. The location is thought to be the samadhi site of Brahmananda Giri.ย Sometimes the area is referred to as Monosha tala rather than Sosti tala.

Harkath Tala

Harkath Tala is located near to Natmandir on the southern side. Bali, or animal sacrifices, are performed mostly at this location. There are two wooden bali-peeths for doing animal sacrifices. The larger altar is for sacrificing bigger animals like buffaloes, and the smaller altar is for smaller animals like goats. A single strike slaughters the animals.

Radha-Krishna Temple

Locals refer to this temple as the Shamo-Ray Temple, and it is located inside the temple grounds to the west of the main temple. In the year 1723, a settlement official from Murshidabad established a separate temple for Radha Krishnan. Later, in 1843, a zamindar called Uday Narayan Mondal erected a new temple construction (the current temple structure) on the same site, while Madan Koley of Saha Nagar constructed the existing Dolmanco in 1858.

Nakuleshwar Mahadev Temple

The Nakuleshwar Mahadev Temple honors Lord Shiva, the spouse of Goddess Kali. This temple is located on the other lane from the temple, directly behind the police station. The temple is on Haldar Para Lane.
