Why is Kolkata famous for tourism?:- Kolkata is the capital of the state of West Bengal in India, known as the “City of Joy“. Kolkata is one of the oldest and historical cities in India. This is the second largest city in India. It developed as a center of cultural, commercial and colonial rule.

Historical and Architectural Landmarks:

Victoria Memorial

Calcutta was the capital of British India, hence many historical and architectural monuments can be seen. Some famous architectural styles are-

1) Howrah Bridge: Built in 1943, the busiest bridge in India is Howrah Bridge. Built over the Hooghly River, this bridge is one of the symbols of Kolkata, hanging without the support of any poles. About 1 lakh vehicles and 5 lakh people travel on this bridge every day.

2) Vidyasagar Bridge: Engineers constructed Vidyasagar Setu (Bridge) in 1992 to reduce the pressure on Howrah Bridge. It stands as the second-longest cable-stayed bridge in India.

3) Victoria Memorial: The Victoria Memorial is one of the most famous structures built in memory of Queen Victoria.

4) Fort William: The British East India Company built Fort William in 1756. The first Fort William was damaged during Nawab Sirajuddaula’s attack in 1756. Later in 1781 a new Fort William was built on the banks of the Ganga.

There are also famous historical and architectural landmarks like Marble Palace, Indian Museum, Belur Math, Shaheed Minar, etc.

1) Rabindra Sadan and Nandan: Center for cultural events.

2) Thakur Bari (Jorasanko Thakur Bari): Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral residence.

3) Coffee House (College Street): The coffee house was the hangout of thinkers like Satyajit Roy, Mrinal Sen, Utpal Dutt etc.

Famous Temples in Kolkata:

Dakshineswar Kali Temple

Kolkata is famous not only for its history, culture and modern architecture, but also for its religious places and temples. There are many ancient and famous temples here-

1) Dakshineswar Kali Temple: Temple of Mother Bhavatarini Devi built by Rani Rasmani in 1855. There are also twelve Shiva temples here.

2) Kalighat Kali Temple: This temple was built around 16th century.

3) Parswanath Jain Temple: The most beautiful and well-decorated Jain temple in Kolkata.

4) Adapith Temple: An important center of Shakti worship in Hinduism. Goddess Adya Shakti and Sri Radhakrishna are worshipped here.

5) Dakshinatya Shiva Temple: One of the oldest Shiva temples in Kolkata.



Parks and Gardens:

Millennium Park

1) Millennium Park: Situated along the river Ganga, this park offers a wonderful view of Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Bridge.

4) Alipore Zoological Garden: White Tiger, Royal Bengal Tiger, Giraffe, Hippopotamus and rare birds can be seen.

There are also Central Park, Nico Park, Nazrul Tirtha Park, Rabindra Sarobar, Vivekananda Park and numerous smaller parks.

Kolkata is one of the best tourist destinations in India for its culture, heritage, architecture and delicious food. Various famous festivals of Kolkata, fairs which are famous all over India. Kolkata also has India’s largest book market. Kolkata is therefore an attractive tourist destination in many ways.
